PARKERSBURG — In collaboration with others, the Mid-Ohio Valley WIC office in Parkersburg has unveiled its new Book Vending Machine.

Mid-Ohio Valley WIC worked with the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative’s Born To Achieve: I CAN READ project, the Neal and Brook Brown Foundation, the WVU School of Pediatric Medicine and early childhood educators from the WVU Nursery School.

The Neal and Brooke Brown Foundation supplied the book vending machine to the office while books were provided by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation-Spartan Foundation.

Tokens provided to participants in the WIC program will be given by nutritionists and are used to “purchase” the books, said Jennifer Habeb, WIC director.

Each book has a QR code on the cover, which directs the child to a recording of a person reading the book, as well as a companion website with resources for parents. Inside the book, a paper gives parents literacy resources along with vocabulary and STEAM challenges.

The Book Vending Machine, located at the Parkersburg office of the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department, provides child participants in the program with a high quality book as well as STEAM challenge ideas and links for parents. (Photo Provided)

“We really appreciate the opportunity to offer books to our participants to promote literacy,” Habeb said.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children has been improving pregnancies and preparing kids to learn for 40 years. The program provides nutrition counseling, parenting advice, breastfeeding support, food assistance and referrals to help families live a healthy life.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department serves Wood, Wirt, Calhoun, Pleasants, Ritchie and Roane counties and is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 304-485-7374 or go to movhd.com for more information.
