The primary election in Maine is on June 14, but another candidate is already getting on the November ballot.

Tiffany Bond, an attorney from Portland, has submitted enough signatures to the Secretary of State's Office to run for Maine's 2nd Congressional District as an independent.

She wrote on Twitter Wednesday "I'm running for #ME02. We needed to talk about gun violence in 2018 when I ran before. We didn't. Spoiler: the problem has gotten worse. We need to work on solutions. Absent a time machine, the next best time is when you all rank me first in November."

While Bond does not live within the district she seeks to represent, federal law does not require it.

Bond ran for the same seat in 2018, a race won by Democrat Jared Golden. That was also the first time ranked choice was used for a congressional race.

Golden is now seeking a third term representing the district that covers more than 3/4 of the state and is the largest geographical district east of the Mississippi River.

Former Congressman Bruce Poliquin is trying to retake the seat he held from 2015 to 2019. He faces a challenge in the Republican primary from Liz Caruso of Caratunk.
