Backers of a campaign targeting a Colorado lawmaker who left the GOP and joined the Democratic Party have received the go-ahead to collect voter signatures in their bid to force a recall election. State Sen. Kevin Priola of suburban Denver cited his disgust with the Republican Party’s embrace of discredited 2020 election conspiracies when he announced his decision to switch parties in August. Colorado’s secretary of state’s office said Friday it had approved a recall petition and that petitioners have until Nov. 8 to collect enough signatures to force an eventual recall vote. Numerous assertions that the 2020 presidential election was stolen have been proven false.

The International Olympic Committee has finally approved its human rights strategy. It completed a years-long process months after the Beijing Olympics brought scrutiny on how sports engage with a host nation’s record on discrimination and civil liberties. The 50-page Olympic document was guided by United Nations principles. It comes the week after the outgoing U.N. human rights chief suggested China’s detention of Uyghurs and other ethnic groups may be a crime against humanity. The IOC says its new rights framework “will fundamentally shape the working practices of the IOC, the Olympic Games and the Olympic movement.”

Eager to root for viewer favorites “Yellowstone” or “NCIS” or “Young Sheldon” during Monday night’s Emmy Awards? Save your breath. Those shows and other ratings successes failed to make a dent in the nominations. Instead, series that are cooler or critically acclaimed got nods, such as “Stranger Things.” While it may be frustrating to fans, observers consider such omissions inevitable in the age of so-called peak TV. It's also proof that television’s most prestigious honor is doing its job. TV academy voters favor innovative shows on streaming services and premium cable, like Netflix's “Squid Game.” The Emmys air Monday on NBC with Kenan Thompson as host.

A federal judge in Florida has dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit against 2016 Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and former top FBI officials, rejecting the former president’s claims that they and others acted in concert to concoct the Russia investigation that shadowed much of his administration. U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks said in a sharply worded ruling on Thursday that Trump’s lawsuit, filed in March, contained “glaring structural deficiencies” and that many of the “characterizations of events are implausible.” A lawyer for Trump said he would appeal the dismissal.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says the state is stepping up its polio-fighting efforts after the virus was detected in the wastewater of yet another county in the New York City area. Health officials began checking for signs of the virus in sewage water after the first case of polio in the United States in nearly a decade was identified in July in Rockland County, which is north of the city. The latest detection involved a wastewater sample collected last month in Nassau County on Long Island, directly east of the city. The lone confirmed case in New York involved an unidentified young adult who was unvaccinated.

Italian president Sergio Mattarella has joined a long list of officials voicing support for North Macedonia joining the European Union, together with other Western Balkan countries. “Without the entry of the countries from the Western Balkans ... the unification of the continent will not be completed,” Mattarella said Friday. He spoke at a press conference in Skopje with North Macedonia’s President Stevo Pendarovski. Six Western Balkan nations are at different stages on their paths toward membership of the 27-member EU. North Macedonia and Albania started membership negotiations in July, while Serbia and Montenegro have made the greatest progress. For all, the process is expected to take years. Nevertheless, it’s seen as important in diminishing Russian influence in the region.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem asked a state ethics board to dismiss a complaint against her without a public hearing and to seal off certain records. The Republican governor's arguments in an April filing were made public Friday as the state's Government Accountability Board released records in a complaint against her. The ethics complaint was sparked by a report from the Associated Press last year that Noem had taken a hands-on role in a state agency shortly after it had moved to deny her daughter a real estate appraiser license. The three retired judges who evaluated the ethics complaint unanimously found last month that there was enough evidence for them to believe that Noem “engaged in misconduct” by committing malfeasance and a conflict of interest.

Major League Baseball has adopted its first pitch clock, limits on defensive shifts and larger bases for next season in an effort to shorten games and increase offense in a tradition-bound sport. The decision on the clock and shift limits by the sport’s 11-man competition committee was made over the unanimous opposition of players on the panel. The changes had long been pushed by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred in an effort to combat the increase in dead time and suffocation of offense in the age of analytics.

Ukraine’s national basketball team gathered this summer tasked with lifting the spirits of those back home in a war-torn country. Turns out, it was the other way around.
