Story Stroll, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Veterans Memorial Park, Cloquet. Stop by the park and enjoy "Little Blue Truck" by Alice Schertle on this story stroll sponsored by the Cloquet Public Library.

Who’s Drumming? Woodpecker Walk, 11-11:45 a.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees should meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center, where they will join a naturalist to walk and explore various woodpecker holes among the park’s trees. The walk will be on an easy, mostly flat trail. While the event is free, a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required. Permits can be purchased at the park office upon arrival. The cost is $7 for the day or $35 for a year.

Thomson Cemetery Tour, 1-2 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet in the cemetery parking lot. Join park staff on a tour of the Thomson Cemetery and discover the history behind the people buried there. The tour includes stairs from the parking lot to the cemetery.

Snack Chat, 3:30-5:30 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. REACH sponsors the weekly event for kids. Participants will make a snack and chat with others while they eat.

Family Movie Night, 4-6 p.m., Cloquet Public Library.

Campfire Program–Black Bears of MN, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet at the amphitheater behind the park office. Attendees can discover the world of the Minnesota black bear and how to make their outdoor adventures more bearable. The program will have bench seating, but those who attend can bring a blanket or camp chair for comfort or social distancing.

Campfire Program – MN Timber Wolves, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Participants can learn more about the wolves of Minnesota, including information about their daily lives and how wolves work together as a pack for survival. No registration is required. Bench seating is available, but attendees may bring a blanket or camp chair for comfort or social distancing.

The tilted rocks by the river have caused people to wonder and marvel at them for centuries. Join park staff on a short geology walk near the river and discover what powerful forces of the past shaped the tilted rocks. The walk is ¼ mile on a level, grassy surface.

Discovery Table – Bugs and Blooms, 1-2:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Stop by the table in front of the River Inn Interpretive Center to hear mini-talks about plants and the insects that pollinate them. Free pollinator seeds will be available while they last.

Junior Park Naturalists: Busy as a Beaver, 4-5 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees should meet behind the River Inn Interpretive Center to learn about the wonderful world of the American Beaver during this kids’ program. Participants will get to take home a beaver puppet craft.

Campfire Program – The “Unhuggables,” 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees will meet at the amphitheater behind the park office. Learn more about the important role by these “unhuggable” critters such as snakes, porcupines, skunks and more.

Carlton Daze. Mass will be held at St. Francis Church at 8:30 a.m.; Services will be held at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 204 t5h St., at 9 a.m.; River’s Edge Church hosts a service at 10 a.m.; the Carlton VFW hosts a Bloody Mary bar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bingo from noon to 4 p.m. and a bean bag tournament at 1 p.m.; the Carlton Daze parade kicks off at 1 p.m.; following the parade, the Carlton Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house at the Carlton Fire Hall, there will be a kids coin hunt at DNR Park and beignets at Magnolia Cafe; a bubble dance part at the N.P. Ferns of the Forest Walk, 4-5 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Participants will take a walk to learn about some of the park’s 15 fern species. The group will meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center.

Campfire Program – Owls of Minnesota, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Participants will learn about the silent hunters of the night. The program will be held at the amphitheater behind the park office. Bench seating is available, but attendees may bring a blanket or camp chair for comfort or social distancing.

Hikin’ for Lichen, 11 a.m. to noon, Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees should meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center for the easy 1-mile walk where they will explore and identify lichens of the Northwoods. Participants will learn about lichens’ expert survival capabilities and their many uses – past and present.

Teen Reads, 4 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. The library's teen librarian will read aloud chapters from a current book. Snacks are provided.

Campfire Building, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees should meet behind the River Inn Interpretive Center, where they will learn techniques to build the perfect campfire and test their fire building skills.

Campfire Program – Summer Stars, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees should mee at the amphitheater behind the park office for an evening outdoors around the campfire exploring the history and mythology of the zodiac constellations. Although it will be too light to see the stars, participants will get some tips and resources on how to go star watching.

Story Time, 10-10:30 a.m., Cloquet Public Library, Join Ms. Keiko as she sings songs and reads a story. The program is designed for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers.

Esko Fun Days, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Northridge Park, 35 Canosia Rd, Esko. A senior lunch will be held, as well as the Davis Helberg Community Impact Award presentation. The History Mystery Medallion Hunt will begin when the clue is posted to Facebook at 9 a.m.

Snake Discovery presents “Snake, Rattle & Roll,” 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. The free program for all ages will focus on reptiles and amphibians that call Minnesota and Wisconsin home. Attendees will get to watch a salamander eat, debunk turtle myths, touch snakes and more. Snake Discovery will bring a tiger salamander, one to two native turtles, three to four native snakes and two to four exotic reptiles. A large boa constrictor named Doug will also make an appearance. Time will be set aside after the presentation for attendees to touch and hold the reptiles.

Bee Calm Story Walk, 10:30-11 a.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Join a naturalist for a story walk. Attendees will listen to a story, learn some yoga stretches and learn about how bees stay calm. Esko Fun Days. The 25th Annual Kristin Burkholder Memorial 5K Walk/Run will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at the Esko High School Sports Complex. The cost for adults is $30 for early birds and $35 starting Aug. 6; cost for students is $25 as early birds or $30 on Aug. 6; and the cost for kids age 5-11 is $17 for early birds or $20 starting Aug. 6. The run honors Kristin Burkholder who died at age 12 from injuries suffered in a pedestrian-car crash while she was running for track practice. All proceeds are donated to scholarships for Esko students. Registration can be found online at https://tempotickets.com/burkholder5k2022. Then the Esko Fun Days Parade will start at 11:30 a.m. A barbecue and games will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Northridge Park. The evening is capped off with a street dance at the fire hall featuring The Northwoods Band from 7-11 p.m. The cost to enter the street dance is $5 per person. Holy Smokes, B&B Wagon, Ma & Pa's, and Fry Shack food trucks will be on hand.

Outdoor Skills Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park. Attendees can meet around the River Inn Interpretive Center any time to try archery, fishing, orienteering, fire building, shelter creation and more. Specific schedule information will be posted closer to the date of the event.

Pop-up Storytime, 10-11 a.m., Sweet Land Farm, 264 Prevost Road, Cloquet. The Cloquet Public Library hosts its weekly story time at Sweet Land Farm. The free event is geared to kids age 0-5 and their families and will include stories and songs. Children will also get to learn about the farm. Families can stay after story time to pick blueberries at a cost of $5 per pound. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and a container for blueberries if they choose to pick.

Knotweed Workshop, 6-7:30 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. Knotweed or bamboo is an invasive plant that spreads rapidly. It can damage property including lakes and stream corridors. Experts from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Duluth Collaborative Invasive Species Management Area will teach attendees how to identify knotweed, map it and slow its spread. A Nesting Place, second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 1-2 p.m. Community Memorial Hospital/Raiter Family Clinic host the free group for new moms regardless of where their baby was delivered.
