After two years, Swift reveals details of her highly anticipated album.

Notorious for making her fans scavenge for clues to determine her next move, Taylor Swift ended the two-year easter egg hunt and announced that her newest album, “Midnights,” is coming on October 21st.

During her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year, Swift announced the upcoming album and promised that more details would unveil at midnight. This announcement came as a shock to her fans, considering it has been two years since the release of a new original album from Swift.

“Evermore” was Swift’s latest original release in 2020, while her recent releases were re-recordings of old albums. The re-recordings of her albums “Fearless” and “Red” last year marked the start of her mission to reclaim her work, which was bought entirely by Scooter Braun in 2019. 

Swift recorded these previous albums while contracted to record company Big Machine, which she split from in 2018. Swift is now re-recording these albums under Republic Records to regain complete ownership of her music. 

As promised, at midnight, Swift posted the cover of her album on social media alongside confirmation of its title. 

“Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21st,” she wrote, in the caption to the long-awaited post. “Meet me at midnight.”

Spurred by a simple caption, fans across the globe have broken down the strategic planning of this album release and have even highlighted the prominence that the concept of midnight has held in Swift’s discography. 

So, let’s get down to the details. Swift’s lucky number is 13; whether it be the number of tracks on an album or the number of emojis in a tweet, 13 has always been symbolic to her and her fanbase. Her upcoming album release confirms that the number lives on through this new era.

The more apparent hint regarding the revival of 13 is seen in the album cover; there are 13 total tracks listed, hence the stories of 13 sleepless nights. Although the release date has nothing to do with 13 at first glance, Swift elaborately planned the release date to correspond with her lucky number. 

The digits of the date are 10/21, but Swift’s fan base has noted that the individual digits 10, 2, and 1, when combined, make 13. It may seem like a stretch, but for fans of Swift, no possibility should be left unexplored.

To dig even deeper into the “Midnights” easter eggs, it’s worth noting that Swift has referenced midnight and sleepless nights several times throughout her discography. Her references to this late hour date back as early as her album “Fearless,” released in 2008.

Swift has mentioned “midnight” or “middle of the night” in her songs thirteen (yes, thirteen) times. Fans had discovered this after the album’s announcement and began to suspect that Swift has been planning this album concept for a while; however, this theory seems rather coincidental.

Aside from fan theories and conjectures, we can confirm a few things. One of the most notable things is that Swift has not released any information on the track titles, leaving her fans in anticipation and speculation.

On August 31st, Swift announced that her album will have three new special edition types of vinyl with alternate album covers and different color pressings, available until September 7th. These special editions also come in CD form and a cassette is available—not in special edition colors, but as a new form of merchandise from Swift.

Fans across the globe are awaiting the release of a single from this album, speculating and theorizing possible days of a single release. However, one thing all fans can agree on is that we will all be ready to hit play on Swift’s new album on October 21st at midnight.
